Vinegar. The pungent smell of vinegar is also a natural way to repel mice and rats. These pests cannot stand the sharp scent of vinegar, which means it can be used as an effective rodent repellent. You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar for this purpose.
So, after ingesting baking soda, this product reacts with the acids in the rat's stomach and creates carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide then builds within the rat and causes a rupture or blockage that eventually kills the rat. This method may work, but there is no guarantee that it will be effective and is not humane.
Vinegar has an unpleasant smell and if used in the pipes and u-bend it may temporarily keep them away. It can sting and would be unpleasant for the rat. Any strong smell may be enough to deter a rodent as it will make them wary that something has changed in the environment.
2) Apple Cider Vinegar: Clean floors, the insides of cabinets and countertops with 50% apple cider vinegar (does not have to be organic) and 50% water. Mice will avoid the area and leave.
Essential oils that may be helpful in repelling rats and mice include peppermint oil, lemon oil, citronella oil, and eucalyptus oil. You can make an essential oil spray by mixing 2 teaspoons of oil with 1 cup of water or rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Then spray it anywhere you see traces of rodents.
Baking soda combines with the stomach acids to produce carbon dioxide gas which rats are unable to tolerate. In turn, it builds up within their system and eventually causes internal blockage and rupture. Soon enough, you will have the rat-free environment you always deserved.
Take a spray bottle and add a mixture of half vinegar and half water, along with a teaspoon full of salt. Mix the solution thoroughly, and then spray it in areas of rat activity. The spray is great for both deterrence and cleaning up after rats.
All you need to do is mix 2 – 2 and a half cups of ammonia, 100 – 200 mL of water and a 2-3 spoonful of detergent in a bowl. Then, put it to places where rats are usually seen. The smell of ammonia is very pungent that it instantly kills rats.
Essential oils are some of the best natural rat repellents. Rats have a highly developed sense of smell, which makes strong odors such as pine oil, cinnamon oil, and even peppermint oil offensive to them. Cayenne pepper, cloves, and a mixture of vinegar and ammonia will keep rats away as well.
Mice or rats die in 24 to 36 hours when exposed to baking soda due to its strong alkalinity, which is well beyond the levels they can handle. Baking soda is natural and mice or rats cannot discriminate between it and food. It does not have to mix with poison or other substances for mice or rats to ingest it.
Peppermint Oil
On a cotton ball use no more than 5 drops of 100% peppermint essential oil. Spread the oil on areas that you want rats to avoid, in your case, around the garden.
A really dilute solution of dettol shouldnt hurt but should stink enough to keep rats out - but I am still a bit cautious about spraying even highly diluted acid anywhere around my engine. I had faced the same problem with my Swift, where the building rats had chewed through a whole bunch of wires.
Pour equal parts peanut butter and baking soda into a small container and mix it well. A few heaped teaspoons of each will make enough bait. Spoon two or more heaped teaspoons of the bait mixture onto each small disposable saucer. Place the saucers with the bait along walls or between spaces where rats frequent.
Advantages. It's cost-effective: Using salt to deter rats is one of the most cost-effective methods of keeping these rodents at bay. Salt is readily available in most homes and hence doesn't require you to purchase additional products.
Bait stations using rodenticides (rat poison) are effective ways to get rid of rats permanently.
Hawks and falcons hunt by day, and owls typically hunt by night. Owls are especially dangerous to rats because they hunt at the same time that rats forage for food. The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicenis) is North America's most familiar and widespread large hawk.
This makes peppermint oil, chili powder, citronella, and eucalyptus the most common natural rodent repellents. Chemical smells, such as ammonia, bleach, and mothballs also work as mice deterrents.
Pest Control – Eucalyptus is an effective remedy against pests like pantry moths, mice, or rats. To keep these pests out, place cotton balls moistened with two drops of eucalyptus oil in cabinets and drawers. For rodents, like mice or rats, the goal is to keep them outside where they belong.
Liquid baits that contain a small amount of sugar are particularly attractive to rodents. Rats will often come to water stations, since they need water daily unless they are feeding on very moist food.
