In the hours before death, most people fade as the blood supply to their body declines further. They sleep a lot, their breathing becomes very irregular, and their skin becomes cool to the touch. Those who do not lose consciousness in the days before death usually do so in the hours before.
The active stage of dying generally only lasts for about 3 days. The active stage is preceded by an approximately 3-week period of the pre-active dying stage. Though the active stage can be different for everyone, common symptoms include unresponsiveness and a significant drop in blood pressure.
They Know They're Dying
Dying is a natural process that the body has to work at. Just as a woman in labor knows a baby is coming, a dying person may instinctively know death is near. Even if your loved one doesn't discuss their death, they most likely know it is coming.
Death just became even more scary: scientists say people are aware they're dead because their consciousness continues to work after the body has stopped showing signs of life. That means that, theoretically, someone may even hear their own death being announced by medics.
There are three main stages of dying: the early stage, the middle stage, and the last stage. These are marked by various changes in responsiveness and functioning. However, it is important to keep mind that the timing of each stage and the symptoms experienced can vary from person to person.
The signs that indicate someone is close to death include loss of appetite, increased weakness, labored breathing, changes in urination, and swelling in extremities. Other end-of-life signs may include sleeping more, increased pain, and becoming less social.
The end-of-life period—when body systems shut down and death is imminent—typically lasts from a matter of days to a couple of weeks. The Active Phase of Dying

Sometimes the breathing may be fast, and at other times there may be long gaps between breaths. Breathing may be shallow or noisy. This, too, is due to blood circulation slowing down and a build up in the body's waste products. It is not painful or distressing for the person.

Days before end of life
They'll move and talk less and may not respond to conversation or commotion. Their sense of hearing is most likely unchanged, but vision may be impaired. Other signs in the final days may include: drop in blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature.

Pallor mortis, paleness which happens in the first 15–120 minutes after death. Algor mortis, the reduction in body temperature following death. This is generally a steady decline until matching ambient temperature. Rigor mortis, the limbs of the corpse become stiff (Latin rigor) and difficult to move or manipulate.
