Lymph nodes deep in the body cannot be felt or seen. So doctors may use scans or other imaging tests to look for enlarged nodes that are deep in the body. Often, enlarged lymph nodes near a cancer are assumed to contain cancer. The only way to know whether there is cancer in a lymph node is to do a biopsy.
Carotid body tumor, presenting as an oval hypoechoic focal lesion, may be confused with an abnormal lymph node. However, its typical location within the common carotid artery bifurcation and abundant vasculature with low resistance flow should help make a proper diagnosis.
Swollen lymph nodes are often painless, moveable, and have a soft, “rubbery” feel to them, says Eric Jacobsen, MD, clinical director of the Adult Lymphoma Program at Dana-Farber.

With your fingertips, in a gentle circular motion feel the lymph nodes shown. Always check your nodes in this order. Check both sides for comparison. If you have an enlarged lymph node it may feel like a swelling the size of a pea, sometimes they can be larger.
The best way to find lymphoma early is to pay attention to possible signs and symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is enlargement of one or more lymph nodes, causing a lump or bump under the skin which is usually not painful. This is most often on the side of the neck, in the armpit, or in the groin.
Low-Grade Lymphoma
These grow so slowly that patients can live for many years mostly without symptoms, although some may experience pain from an enlarged lymph gland. After five to 10 years, low-grade disorders begin to progress rapidly to become aggressive or high-grade and produce more severe symptoms.
They are hard or unmovable – Unfortunately, apart from being painless and abnormally large, swollen lymph nodes in leukaemia or lymphoma tend to feel quite similar to infected lymph nodes. However, occasionally they can feel very hard and cannot be moved when pushed.
Lymph nodes measuring more than 1 cm in the short axis diameter are considered malignant.
People can check whether their lymph nodes are swollen by gently pressing around the area, such as the side of the neck. Swollen lymph nodes will feel like soft, round bumps, and they may be the size of a pea or a grape. They might be tender to the touch, which indicates inflammation.
Healthcare providers usually only worry about swollen lymph nodes when they enlarge for no apparent reason. If you have a large, swollen area but you're not feeling sick and you didn't recently have a cold, flu or other infection, see your healthcare provider.

Untreated lymphadenitis may lead to: Abscess formation. Cellulitis (a skin infection) Fistulas (seen in lymphadenitis that is due to tuberculosis)
Do not squeeze, drain, or puncture a painful lump. Doing this can irritate or inflame the lump, push any existing infection deeper into the skin, or cause severe bleeding. Get extra rest.
You don't need to worry about your swollen lymph nodes most of the time. But you should talk to your health care provider if your swollen glands: Feel hard and don't move around easily when you press on them. Grow bigger than one centimeter (or the size of a large pea)
