The euthanasia injection The pet will be given a concentrated overdose of the anaesthetic so that they peacefully fall asleep and then pass away. This usually happens quite quickly, often in less than a minute, and many owners are surprised by this. The injection is not painful.
It's an option that many people choose to prevent pets from suffering in their final days. Pet euthanasia can be performed in a veterinary clinic or at home.
Your dog will hardly know what happened and will simply start to feel pleasantly drowsy. You will notice that I said “Your vet will hopefully prepare an anaesthetic or sedative injection for your dog”. Some do not. Having seen it done both ways, the “two injection” method is definitely my preference.
You may choose to leave your pet with the veterinarian for burial or cremation, or you may be able to bury your pet at home depending on the ordinances in your area.
A: Typically, a peaceful death takes 30 seconds from intravenous euthanasia solution administration. However, the appointment for your pet's end-of-life care may take half an hour or longer, depending on whether we place an IV catheter and administer sedation prior to euthanasia.
The heart and lungs will stop functioning within minutes after injecting the euthanasia solution, so dogs generally won't feel pain because they are unconscious. Answer: Fortunately for us, dogs do not understand they are going to be put down and what happens after they are given the injection that puts them to sleep.

But does your dog understand the depth of love you have for him or her? According to Dr. Brian Hare, a canine cognition specialist, our dogs do know we love them. Dogs and humans have the ability to form a special neural connection.

Our vets want you to know that the euthanasia process is almost completely painless. Putting a pet to sleep is a two part process: A vet will start by giving your pet an IV which is usually painless or nearly painless, depending on your pet's tolerance for shots. If there is any pain, it will be very short-lived.
Melatonin is commonly used as a sleep aid, and is sometimes used to treat certain hair disorders, cognitive dysfunction and separation anxiety in dogs, as well as sleep cycle disorders in dogs and cats. Generally, it is very safe, with lethargy and stomach upset being a potential issue in cases of overdose.
In most jurisdictions, euthanasia is only considered as an option for dogs who've been involved in two or three serious bite incidents. In the majority of situations, a dog will not be put down for a first bite.

After the injection
Your pet may appear to gasp or suddenly have a deep breath. Sometimes this may carry on for several breaths. This is a wholly-natural bodily reflex. Your pet will already have died and is not aware of any of this.

With sedation the transition from a conscious pet to passing is a gradual one. Using sedation means the process of saying good bye is much smoother, and peaceful. For the pet, this means that no one has to restrain them so that a vein can be accessed.
Your dog is already asleep at this point, not feeling any pain, and may already be considered deceased. Finally, as your dog passes away and their muscles start to relax, you may notice some twitching, movement or even paddling of the legs. They can also relax their bowels and bladder, causing weeing and pooing.
The body language that your dog uses when you kiss them will be an indicator that they know it is a sign of affection. Of course, dogs don't know what kisses actually are, but they learn to realize that they are good.
Many people feel it is important to be present during euthanasia. Many others feel unable to handle this traumatic event. And make no mistake: Witnessing the euthanasia of your beloved companion IS traumatic (though it can also help allay fears that your companion suffered).
A veterinarian may recommend euthanasia, which is a humane death, when other options to reduce pain and distress are no longer helpful. Euthanasia may be recommended when you least expect it, such as if your pet is diagnosed with a terminal illness or if they've been in a debilitating accident.
So, do I cry during a euthanasia? Yes, sometimes this vet cries. I do not apologise for crying and I tell my clients they do not need to apologise for crying. We love our pets.
First, unlike humans, animals cannot express a desire to die, making “voluntary euthanasia” not meaningful for animals. Secondly, as Bernard Rollin, a professor at Colorado State University, points out, pets do not have the capacity to imagine how the suffering that they experience can give way at some point to relief.
