Trichomoniasis is common globally, but less so in men than women, often presenting asymptomatically, though it can cause urethritis. Prevalence varies, being higher in specific groups like those attending STI clinics, certain racial/ethnic groups (e.g., Black men), and older individuals, with higher rates in remote/incarcerated populations, though MSM (men who have sex with men) generally have low rates.
In a nationally representative sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized US population aged 18–59 years, Trichomonas vaginalis infection was detected in 0.5% of males and 1.8% of females, and was highest among black males (4.2%) and black females (8.9%).
Trichomoniasis is not a very common infection in urban Australia. People who have had sex overseas, or in remote areas of Australia, may be at increased risk of catching Trichomonas. This risk is higher if condoms are not always used during sex.
In men, trichomoniasis rarely causes symptoms. But when symptoms happen, they can include: Itching or irritation inside the penis. Burning with urination or after the penis releases semen.
Transmission of Trichomonas occurs through sexual contact. More than 50% of women have minimal or no symptoms. Those with symptoms often complain of vulvar or vaginal irritation, malodorous yellow-green vaginal discharge, pruritis, and postcoital bleeding.
We detected T. vaginalis in 72% of the male sexual partners of women with trichomoniasis, using culture and PCR from urine, urethral swabs, and semen. Not surprisingly, substantially more T. vaginalis infections in men were detected by PCR than by culture.
While some people fear they can catch it from public restrooms or shared bedsheets, trich is almost always passed through sexual contact. In rare cases, the parasite can survive on damp surfaces like towels, but experts emphasize that the real risk lies in unprotected sex.
Most people with trichomonas infection will have no symptoms but they can still pass the infection on. If you do develop symptoms you may get: a yellow or green discharge from the vagina or penis, which can sometimes have an unpleasant smell.
In men, trichomoniasis can cause urethritis, prostatitis, epididymitis, urinary tract infections, and diminished fertility. Although the majority of patients exhibit only mild symptoms, trichomoniasis can cause significant complications.
Some people get symptoms within 5 to 28 days after getting the infection. Others do not develop symptoms until much later. Symptoms can come and go.
According to Professor Catriona Bradshaw, a clinician scientist and Head of Research Translation and Mentorship at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Alfred Health and School of Translational Medicine, Monash University, “Mycoplasma genitalium is an STI that has resulted in untreatable infections thanks to AMR.”
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common STI in the United States. There are more than 40 different strands of HPV and many do not cause any health problems. In 90% of cases, the body's immune system clears the infection naturally within two years.
Diagnosis. Trichomoniasis can sometimes be difficult to diagnose because symptoms are similar to those of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you think you may have trichomoniasis, you should visit a GP or your local sexual health clinic (genitourinary medicine (GUM)) clinic.
Trich spreads during sexual intercourse — in semen (cum) and vaginal fluids. Its name comes from the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which causes the infection. You may have trich and not know it — most people don't have symptoms from the infection.
While trichomoniasis is usually passed sexually, it may be picked up from contact with damp or moist objects such as towels, wet clothing, or a toilet seat, if the genital area gets in contact with these damp or moist objects.
Trich needs to be treated so that you don't spread it to others. Both you and your sex partner or partners should be treated at the same time so you don't infect each other again. If you're pregnant, your doctor will talk with you about treatment. Trich may cause problems with pregnancy.
Symptoms in men
discharge from your penis. pain when peeing. needing to pee often. pain or soreness in your penis, testicles (balls) or bottom, or when you ejaculate.
Diagnosis
A: There's no dormancy period for a Trichomoniasis infection, which means if you are infected, you have acquired Trichomoniasis. Q: How long does it take for trichomoniasis to show up? A: You can experience symptoms 5-28 days after infection; sometimes, these can develop much later or may not show at all.
You will receive 4 white metronidazole pills (500mg each). Take all 4 pills at the same time with a full glass of water. ∎ Do NOT drink alcohol for 24 hours after taking this medicine. It could make you very sick.
Trichomoniasis testing usually looks for the parasite in a sample of body fluid that's swabbed from the infected area. In women, the infection is usually in the vagina. In men, the infection is usually in the urethra, a tube in the penis that carries urine (pee) out of the body.
Cervical cancer induced by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection poses a serious threat to women's health. Studies have shown that Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis), which is widely prevalent globally, can facilitate HPV infection. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear.
Nearly every sexually active person will have HPV at some point. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. More than 40 types of HPV can be spread sexually. You can get them through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. You can get them by skin-to-skin contact, too.
You can also catch trichomoniasis by sharing wet towels with someone who is infected, as the parasite can live on wet towels for a few hours. You cannot catch trichomoniasis from contact with toilet seats.
Trichomoniasis (aka trich) is the most common curable STD.
The parasite is carried in sexual fluids, like semen, pre cum, and vaginal fluids. Most people with trichomoniasis don't have any symptoms and feel totally fine, so they might not even know they have it.
