Waking up every 2 hours to pee at night, known as nocturia, often signals lifestyle habits like drinking too much before bed or consuming caffeine/alcohol, but can also point to conditions like UTIs, overactive bladder, prostate issues (in men), diabetes, heart disease, or sleep apnea. Simple fixes involve reducing fluids and caffeine at night, but if it persists, see a doctor to check for underlying causes like infections, enlarged prostate (BPH), or diabetes, as treatment depends on the cause.

Most people urinate four to seven times in a day. If you are making more trips to the bathroom, especially waking multiple times at night to go, it may be a sign that your kidneys are working overtime to flush out excess sugar in your blood.
If you feel the need to urinate more often, especially at night, this can be a sign of kidney disease. When the kidney's filters are damaged, it can cause an increase in the urge to urinate. Sometimes this can also be a sign of a urinary infection or enlarged prostate in men.

For humans, this serves as a loose benchmark: urinating significantly faster (e.g., under 10 seconds) or slower (over 30 seconds) might signal holding it too long or an overactive bladder, though it's not an exact diagnosis.

It's normal to urinate 1-2 times per night, typically between 10 pm and 6 am As we age, our ability to concentrate urine while we sleep diminishes, leading to more frequent nighttime urination. If you're finding you are waking up more than three or four times each night, consult your doctor.

Water helps flush out toxins and waste products from your body, allowing your kidneys to function more efficiently. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, and consider increasing your intake if you're active or live in a hot climate.
This also applies to normal urinary frequency. For most people, the normal number of times to urinate per day is between 6 – 7 in a 24 hour period. Between 4 and 10 times a day can also be normal if that person is healthy and happy with the number of times they visit the toilet.
If you drink 8 ounces of water, it will generally be in your bladder within 20 minutes. So, it's a good idea to plan your restroom breaks if your bladder doesn't give you the warning signal. Additionally, there's no health benefit to consuming large volumes of water. Drinking more than 12 ounces at once is excessive.
At night, go to the bathroom only if you awaken and find it necessary. When you feel the urge to urinate before the next designated time, use "urge suppression" techniques or try relaxation techniques like deep breathing. Focus on relaxing all other muscles. If possible, sit down until the sensation passes.
