Australia has played in seven of the twelve finals (1975, 1987, 1996, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015). New Zealand has yet to win the World Cup, but has been runners-up two times (2015 and 2019).
New Zealand has one world title under its belt; the ICC Champions Trophy, won in Kenya in 2000-01 (when it was the ICC Knockout).

Australia is the most successful World Cup team having won the tournament five times, and were runner up another two times. West Indies won the first two tournaments, and India have also won it two times. Pakistan and Sri Lanka have won one tournament each.

The Australia national soccer team played their first international match in 1922. They have won four Nations Cup titles, in 1980, 1996, 2000 and 2004 and one Asian Cup in 2015. However, they have never won the FIFA World Cup, with their best performance being a finish in the Round of 16 in 2006 and 2022.

The 2002 World Cup saw three golden goals with Senegal beating Sweden and South Korea beating Italy in the Round of 16 with the rule.
New Zealand ended up being the only unbeaten team at this World Cup, thanks in part to eventual champions Spain losing to Switzerland in their Group H game. Italy placed last, making it the first time since 1974 that the Italians did not advance beyond the first round.

Australia have competed in every edition of the Rugby League World Cup. They have won the competition 11 out of 15 times and have finished as runners-up on three other occasions.
Australian Rules Football is clearly the most popular spectator sport in Australia, though in terms of participation more men play golf, cricket and tennis. Rugby league is another popular sport, but not as a sport to play.
In October 1899 the Boer War had broken out between the British and the mainly Dutch farmers (Boers) of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State. The Australian colonies and (after Federation) the Commonwealth sent contingents totalling 16,175 men to serve with the British army.
