The French very rarely hug. In France, hugs are not a part of daily life. Unlike Americans, the French do not use hugging as a greeting. Instead, they kiss cheeks (faire la bise) informally and shake hands in formal settings.
It's just a cultural tendency around here to be more insular and guarded. This is not to say that Parisians don't ever smile – it's just considered by many locals to be disingenuous to be smiling all the time or toward strangers as we Americans (transplants included) do.
However, many of us assume smiling means the same thing in all cultures. This, though, is not the case. In fact, for one, different cultures smile more or less than one another. Some cultures even have different intents for smiling and different times that are appropriate for such.
Personal space is not as important to the French as it is to Anglo-Saxons and Americans. They are comfortable with a distance of one foot, while British people normally stand about two feet apart. In general, when you see French people conversing, they will stand in closer proximity than British or American people.
For Parisians eye contact is a personal matter, much like your choice of wine, or infidelity in relationships. As a general rule, you have to avoid looking strangers in the eye; it's slightly offensive.
French people tend not to visit unannounced or uninvited. To do so is considered rude. When invited to a dinner, it is common for guests to ask their hosts if they are required to bring something on the day. Guests may also bring a bottle of wine or dessert.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is also the country that smiles the most globally.

In general, staring is not considered as rude in France as in some other places. Although French mamans will tell their children that it's rude to stare (or to point) that doesn't mean that people don't do it when they grow up.
Smiling at strangers
Unlike some countries, beaming at anyone who walks past you isn't standard practise. The French don't tend to smile at people they don't know, or smile continuously in interactions, and might feel awkward about reciprocating the gesture.

The majority of people in France say they are happy, a new poll has found, despite worries over the climate and rising costs. However, fewer people say they feel optimistic now than in 2021. The results were: Happy: 68% (down 11 percentage points compared to October 2021)
