Most commonly, they can make you feel more active, or even euphoric. If you end up taking your steroid dose later in the day, they can keep you awake at night and impact your sleep/wake cycle. Steroids can also cause confusion, especially in older patients and when given in high doses for long periods.
Hyperactivity. While prednisone is not a stimulant, it can make you feel more alert or jittery. “It doesn't really interrupt sleep, but some patients find it keeps them awake when they don't want to be,” Dr. Ford says.
Talk to your doctor right away if you have more than one of these symptoms while you are using this medicine: blurred vision, dizziness or fainting, a fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat, increased thirst or urination, irritability, or unusual tiredness or weakness.
Since cortisol is responsible for the fight-or-flight response, prednisone, along with other steroid medications, produces the same stimulatory effects, which can lead to a disruption of the normal sleep-wake cycle. Side effects of steroids
Steroids do not tend to cause significant side effects if they're taken for a short time or at a low dose. But sometimes they can cause unpleasant side effects, such as an increased appetite, mood changes and difficulty sleeping (insomnia). This is most common with steroid tablets.

Steroid flare can last for up to a week. If you do experience a steroid flare, we would advise that you rest for a longer period of time until the pain subsides. It is not possible to predict who will get a steroid flare following a steroid injection prior to the injection.

You could expect a dose of prednisone to stay in your system for 16.5 to 22 hours. The elimination half life of prednisone is around 3 to 4 hours. This is the time it takes for your body to reduce the plasma levels by half. It usually takes around 5.5 half lives for a drug to be completely eliminated from your system.
The greatest pain relief happened within a few hours after taking my prednisone dose. Cortisol is what regulates inflammation. Normally, your cortisol level is at the lowest at midnight and gradually increases during the night and peaks between 6-8 am.

The most serious prednisone side effects usually include allergic reactions, infections, gastrointestinal issues and elevated blood sugar. These may occur when people take larger doses or take the medication for long-term treatment.
