Sloths are mostly solitary animals, roaming the rainforests very slowly, upside-down and alone. But when it's time for a get-together, female sloths are not shy about what they need. They scream for sex, as loud as they can, trying to get the attention of every male sloth in the tri-state area.
When a female sloth is "in heat" and ready to breed she doesn't wait for the males to come to her, she actively encourages them with high-pitched screams. The males will then follow the sound of the screams until he finds her.
These vocalizations, or “screams”, sound like bird calls or shrill whistles. She will do this for eight to ten days every single month, with the vocalizations increasing in frequency until she is screaming every 10 to 15 minutes.
Baby sloths make squeaking noises and according to National Geographic, “In the wild baby sloths spend the first three to six months of their lives clinging to their mothers. If they are separated from their mothers, they make this noise so that mom can find them again.”
Two-fingered sloths can make a similar growl when angry, and a wild female sloth has been heard making sounds very similar to the cry of a baby after her baby died. Apart from this, they remain silent and stealthy!
Sloths do not show affection towards people, and in fact, may even actively dislike people. Studies have shown that human physical contact with captive-raised sloths who are desensitized to human presence will still trigger a stress response.
Because sloths are solitary, wild animals, they prefer to be alone. They do not crave human attention like dogs or cats. Nor do they like to be petted, groomed, or bathed because these are not natural behaviors for them.
The course of progesterone concentrations resulted in a cycle length of 4-5 weeks length in the two-toed sloth.
Like the animal itself, the digestive system of a sloth is very slow, taking days to digest the leaves it eats. Their simple gut microbes mean they don't produce flatulence; instead, the methane those microbes give off is absorbed into the bloodstream and simply breathed out.
Sloths, unlike many animals, do not show obvious external signs of stress. Their natural response to fear or danger is to hold still, and as a result, it is difficult to tell when a sloth is scared or stressed.
How do sloths mate? Sloths mate once a year and produce one infant per parturition, rarely twins. Infants suckle from their mothers for a few months but remain with them for about a year. Two-toed sloths have a longer gestation period of around 10 months, while in three-toed sloths gestation lasts for about six months.

Great ape menstrual cycles appear to be more regular and generally longer compared with humans. Orangutans cycles are approximately 29 days, gorillas 30 – 32 days, bonobos 32-35 days and chimpanzees ~37 days, though it can range from 31 – 36.7 days in this species.
Beyond primates, it is known only in bats, the elephant shrew, and the spiny mouse species Acomys cahirinus. Females of other species of placental mammal undergo estrous cycles, in which the endometrium is completely reabsorbed by the animal (covert menstruation) at the end of its reproductive cycle.
While it's not yet possible to have a pet sloth in Australia, if that day ever does come around they might just replace dogs as the ultimate family pet.
Two-fingered sloths can bite anyone who approaches them too closely with their four sharp teeth, which resemble big canines. If left untreated, a wound from a sloth attack can become severely infected due to the bacteria they carry, which can bring a lot of health issues, where you could even lose a limb!
When the environmental temperature drops, so does the sloths body temperature, and if it drops too low then the bacteria and microbes die. In this situation, the sloth can eat the same amount of leaves as normal but can starve to death on a full stomach because they can't extract any nutrients.
Sloths have an average body temperature of around 31 degrees, so they can't survive outside of the tropics. Oh, me? I am just hanging around. Like koalas, there's a common misconception that sloths are slow and lazy because they're always high, or something along those lines.
Though they may appear just as endearing as our domestic pets, sloths maintain their natural instincts. Generally, sloths do not like to be pet, groomed or bathed.
They can cause the sloth undue distress
There has been research done that shows that sloths definitely do not like being held. When they are held, their heart rates increase and they are visibly more alert, indicating that being held by people can be very distressing and disorienting.
The current Guinness book of world record's holder for the world's longest fart is a man name Bernard Clemmens of London. This man managed to let off one continuous fart for exactly two minutes and forty two seconds, a feat that has yet to be even close to replicated by other fart enthusiasts.
