Duration of estrus
While most ewes exhibit estrus over 24-36 hours, many exhibit heat for either less or more time. Ewe lambs show estrus for a shorter time than mature ewes. Of the cycles studied, 90% were between 15 and 45 hours in length.

Male lambs sold for grazing or as pets should be castrated as they will be easier to manage. As with tail docking, there are many techniques that can be used to castrate ram lambs. The easiest and most common method of castration is the rubber ring or band.
Year-round breeding
Ewes may be bred when they are in poor body condition. The ram may breed his daughters and dam. Undersized ewe lambs may be bred.
Outbreeding is the recommended breeding practice for most purebred sheep breeders. Inbreeding is a system of breeding in which closely-related animals are mated. This includes sire to daughter, son to dam, and brother to sister.
My advice is to leave the ram with the ewes after the official breeding season has ended, at least up to lambing. He will graze with them and in the winter, he will eat hay with them. No need to add extra work to house a ram separately at that time.
If the ewe doesn't show interest in the lamb(s), using salt (even table salt) on the body of the lamb will get the interest of the ewe, as she starts to lick the salt covering the lamb, in this way the dam-lamb bond in unexperienced primiparous and those ewes with low maternal instincts is being encouraged.

Like all sheep, though, rams hate to be alone. They should be penned or accompanied by at least one buddy sheep, like a wether or another ram. Rams may fight one another, but they don't always. Many rams live peacefully together in pairs or small groups.
Place one ram or group of rams with the ewes for one day (or night). Replace rams with another ram or group while you rest and feed the first ones. Two aggressive rams can be used on 100 ewes. For hand breeding, place the ewe in heat with the ram for breeding one time and then remove her.
