DEAR CINDY: Generally speaking, rats are nocturnal, coming out at dusk and doing their rodent business. However, they do sometimes venture out in the day. Rats have learned to live in close to humans and so they adapt their natural instincts to suit their needs.
Rats are nocturnal which means they're most active at night and during dawn and dusk. What's more, even though they can be brazen at times, they will generally do everything they can to avoid human contact. Typically, they will wait until it's very quiet before venturing out.
Rats and mice are nocturnal with most activity taking place between approximately one half hour after sunset to about one half hour before sunrise. Garbage is an excellent food source for rodents.

Get rid of rats fast Using Traps
Place traps along the walls, behind furniture, and in areas where you have noticed rat droppings or other signs of activity. Use bait such as peanut butter, cheese, or fruit to lure rats into the traps. Check and replace traps regularly until you have caught all the rats.
It's just a fact -- rats are vastly more difficult to effectively get rid of than mice.
So the rat and mouse population is at it's highest by late Summer/early Autumn. As autumn progresses the food sources start to dry up and the vegetation dies back. Rats and mice will feel the cold and will now start to seek cover, alternative food and warmth. This is when they move into buildings.
