Females of most vertebrate species exhibit recurring periods of heightened sexual activity in which they are sexually attractive, proceptive and receptive to males. In mammalian females (except Old World monkeys, apes and humans), this periodic sex appeal is referred to as 'heat' or 'estrus'.
“WOMEN don't miaow and they don't scratch at the door,” says Randy Thornhill, “but they do have oestrus.” Most female mammals experience a hormone-induced oestrus or “heat”, but women are not thought to, and are not considered to be aware of when they are most fertile.
Estrus, or “heat,” typically coincides with ovulation, and during this time the female is receptive to the male. Estrus is preceded by proestrus, during which ovarian follicles mature under the influence of a follicle-stimulating hormone from the anterior pituitary.
A hot flash is the sudden feeling of warmth in the upper body, which is usually most intense over the face, neck and chest. Your skin might redden, as if you're blushing. A hot flash can also cause sweating. If you lose too much body heat, you might feel chilled afterward.
Signs seen during this phase include a swollen vulva, blood-tinged discharge, excessive licking of the genital area, clingy behavior, and aggression toward male dogs. Your dog may also hold her tail close to her body. Estrus: The estrus phase is the mating phase where your female dog will be receptive to males.
Cold Hands, Warm Heart
But a University of Utah study published in the journal Lancet found that women's core body temperatures can actually run 0.4 degrees F higher than men's on average.
Most dogs come into heat twice per year, or about every six months, although the interval can vary between breeds and from dog to dog. Small breed dogs may cycle three times per year, while giant breed dogs may only cycle once every 12 months.
Heat usually lasts between 2-4 weeks. Early in the cycle, a female dog may not be receptive to male dogs, although some are receptive through the entire cycle.
Female dogs who have not been spayed go into heat twice a year, around every 6 months. Each heat cycle lasts around 18 days, for generally anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks. The frequency depends on your dog, but her estrus cycles should be consistent.
And what about during your period? Previous studies have shown that a woman's body odor is strongest during menstruation and that men who are particularly sensitive to smells can even detect this change in her scent.
Let her be your best friend first, then ease into things. A girl needs to know that she can trust you, and that you're not going to break her heart because you really do care about her. Be sincere. Compliments, flirting, teasing, carefulness -- none of it matters unless you truly do care.
Not quite “heat,” but a real uptick in sex drive and appeal. Ovulating women may flirt more, dress flashy or undergo modest physical changes, such as rosier cheeks and plumper breasts. And some scientists further argue that men can detect these signs on a subconscious level.
A dictionary definition of oestrus is 'the periodic state of excitement in the female of most mammals, excluding humans, that immediately precedes ovulation and during which the female is most receptive to mating; heat' (American Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 2002).
Nervously aggressive behavior: Since a female dog in heat is secreting mating hormones, she may exhibit unusually aggressive behavior.
“Heat” is the start of a female dog's reproductive cycle. So, if your puppy is female, be prepared — girl dogs start their reproductive cycle when they're anywhere from 6 months to a year old.
According to the American Kennel Club, male dogs don't go into heat; instead, they're capable of mating year-round once they become fertile at about 6 months old.

Whether you call it humping, mounting or thrusting, the behavior is natural in male and female dogs. For some dogs, it is a response to arousal. For others, it can just be a way to exert dominance and show that they're the top dog in the house.
Silent Heat Cycle
This occurs when your female will have a heat cycle without the normal symptoms such as bleeding and swelling of the vulva. Females will still be receptive to males and can become pregnant. Your veterinarian can check for a silent heat cycle by performing vaginal cytology and progesterone assays.
Often, during courtship, females in heat mount and hump their male “suitors.” Female dogs also commonly mount and hump other females when one or both are in heat.
The term “In Heat” is used in crude circles to refer to female humans in this heightened state of ovulation and readiness to mate, because the ovulating body literally rises in temperature for a brief period when ready to mate.
Different parts of our body have different temperatures, with the rectum being the warmest (37℃), followed by the ears, urine and the mouth. The armpit (35.9℃) is the coldest part of our body that is usually measured.
Therefore, the study concluded that the way our body responds to heat depends on morphological changes, but not on gender. The same body temperature changes occurred in all of the participants, irrespective of their sex.
Humans have a remarkable ability to adapt to heat stress and given adequate water and protection from the sun, a healthy heat-acclimated individual can tolerate extended exposure to virtually any natural weather-related heat stress (Wenger, 1988; Hori, 1995; Sawka et al., 1996).
