Despite a limited vocabulary, dogs and babies communicate with us. They may not be verbal creatures, but they manage to “speak” back to us. Even without an extensive vocabulary, they make us understand their whines, cries, and coos especially when combined with their own special body language.
Despite what they may lack in the elocution department, dogs do communicate their feelings to humans as well as read our cues, thanks to domestication, Julia Riedel and colleagues of the Max Planck Institute (M.P.I.) for Evolutionary Anthropology reported in March 2008 in Animal Behavior.
Clues like pitch, body language, and tail behavior can help. High-pitched barks are welcoming, while deep barks may be an alert. A wagging-tailed bark spells joy while a crouched, angry bark with hackles up can mean fear or aggression.
Unfortunately, everything we know points to no. They may try with growls and barks, and they may even be able to mimic words you've taught them. However, scientists have explored whether dogs can tell the difference between similar-sounding words, and they can't quite make those distinctions.

Several of the dogs in the study could also understand tasty words like “treat,” “breakfast,” and “dinner,” and playful words like “ball” and “squirrel.”
A little more surprising is that the dogs liked hearing their favorite words and the baby talk voice together best of all. Especially puppies! So the next time you feel a little silly talking to your favorite four-legged family member like they're a baby, be proud instead. It's science.
