Amur tigers were once found throughout northern China, the Russian Far East and the Korean peninsula. By the 1940s, hunting had driven them to the brink of extinction—with no more than 40 individuals remaining in the wild.
According to the IUCN Red List, the South China tiger has been critically endangered since 1996. It is now possibly extinct in the wild since the last confirmed tiger sighting was in the 1990s. Some reports of wild tigers still existing are known to be fraudulent or unconfirmed.
Unfortunately, three of these subspecies — the Javan, Caspian, and Bali tigers — were driven to extinction by the mid- to late-20th century. The South China tiger, although still hanging on, is considered extinct in the wild.
Myth. The ancient Chinese believed tigers could live for a thousand years, turning white after living five centuries. Despite actually being an Old Chinese phonetic transcription of Central Asian names, the word for amber—properly 琥珀—was sometimes miswritten and misunderstood as 虎魄, "the tiger's soul".
How many South China tigers remain in the wild? Zero. The South China Tiger is the world's most endangered tiger as is now extinct in the wild. They survive only in captivity, mostly in Zoos in China.
Panthera tigris trinilensis lived about 1.2 million years ago and is known from fossils excavated near Trinil in Java. The Wanhsien, Ngandong, Trinil, and Japanese tigers became extinct in prehistoric times. Tigers reached India and northern Asia in the late Pleistocene, reaching eastern Beringia, Japan, and Sakhalin.

According to conservationists, there are only about five tigers recorded in the wild in Vietnam. However, individuals and businesses are seeing booming activities of tiger farming for non-commercial purposes, with the number of registered captive ones increasing year by year.

But the lion was savage and cruel, consequently 玉皇大帝 (yù huáng dà dì) "the Jade Emperor" wanted to replace him with a tiger. At this time, there was great unrest amongst the creatures on earth, and they were endangering humans.
In China, the Tiger is considered the king of all beasts as it symbolises power and a great deal of nerve. The Tiger has always featured heavily in Chinese culture and tradition. It is also known as the king of the mountain.
In rural Hong Kong, tigers were a menace right up to the 1960s, according to Saeki. There are even reports of tigers swimming out to several outlying islands, including Lamma and Lantau. Tigers just weren't expected in the rather unglamorous scrubland of Hong Kong's landscape.

Unfortunately, there are no longer any tigers left in the wild in South Korea. The Siberian tiger, also known as the Amur tiger, used to roam forests throughout Korea, northern China and eastern Russia, but is now only found in a few remote places. These are the largest cats in the world!
Tragically, the South China Tiger has not been in the wild for 25 years. They are only now found in captivity in China and in South Africa, making them what is called 'functionally extinct'. Even in captivity, only 100 of these intelligent and extraordinary beings are left.
According to the interim census results, there are now between 480 and 540 Amur tigers across their existing range, with around 100 of these known to be cubs. Russia's Far East is home to 95% of the global population of Amur tigers, and the last census showed there were between 423 to 502 individuals.
Currently, no more than 50 wild tigers are left in China.

Hunted for meat and for sport, and used as a motif in the decorative arts, the kangaroo was finally recognised as an official symbol of Australia when it was included on the nation's coat of arms in 1908. The kangaroo has appeared on currency and stamps and on Royal Australian Air Force aircraft.

Originally bred as companion dogs to the ancient Chinese imperial family, Pekingese have historically been revered as sacred in China—according to one legend, they're lions shrunk to miniature size by the Buddha.
During war, tigers may acquire a taste for human flesh from the consumption of corpses which have lain unburied, and go on to attack soldiers; this happened during the Vietnam and Second World Wars.
Approximately 350-400 adult Siberian or Amur tigers are left in the wild, with 95% of these individuals inhabiting the forests of the Russian Far East, where they play a critical role in both the ecosystem and local culture.
The United States Archives and other sources suggest that between 25 and 50 American soldiers a year were bitten by snakes during the war in Vietnam. Some 10,786 American soldiers died of non-combat causes, including 9,107 by accidents and 938 due to illness. Snake bites were not specified.
