No matter how viewers felt about Damon and Elena's relationship, Elena is Damon's only real love interest for the majority of the series. After he moves on from Katherine in Season 1, he falls so helplessly in love with Elena that anyone else he was with was only there to pass the time.
When Sheila transported Bonnie, and unintentionally Damon, to the 1994 prison world, the pair were resurrected in the process. They are both best friends with Caroline. Bonnie turned her back on Elena after her grandmother died, blaming Damon and Stefan and not wanting Elena to choose between her and them. She later forgave her when she saw her crying.
Bonnie ended up finally taking control of her witch powers in the finale, saving Mystic Falls and breaking the curse keeping Elena asleep without having to die in the process.
The episode ends with Elena and Damon fighting over their relationship and how much one depends on another. They decide to break up because their love makes them something else of what they really are but they end up in bed together because they cannot fight what they feel for each other.
