Famous in both the wizarding and Muggle communities, Merlin was a wizard who was open about his abilities and who did good for the world, making him one of the good Slytherin wizards.
Severus Snape, Horace Slughorn, Andromeda Tonks, Narcissa Malfoy and Regulus Black were all Slytherin heroes in their own way, if you think about it. And Merlin – as in, yes, King Arthur's advisor and the most famous wizard in history – was a Slytherin.
Who are the evil witches and wizards in the Harry Potter books that weren't members of the Slytherin house? Peter Pettigrew, who was in Gryffindor. Prof Quirrel, who was in Ravenclaw. Gilderoy Lockhart (not evil per se but definitely a criminal) who was in Ravenclaw as well.
Slytherins are hardworking and desire success. They are known to achieve great things (even if not always good things). They are the kind of people who make you want to be better just by being around them. They are determined and resourceful.
But Harry did share some Slytherin traits: he was ambitious and cunning, always sneaking around after hours and cooking up plans with Ron and Hermione. His green eyes even match the house. It is curious to think what the Sorting Hat would have deduced without Voldemort's involvement in Harry's life.
While Slytherin historically dominates the House competition, in the books, Gryffindor wins at the last second (often from Dumbledore's help, but that's beside the point). That's the lesson in the books: Gryffindor wins in a literal and metaphorical way. They're competitive, but not to the point of being mean-spirited.
Worst: Lucius Malfoy
Lucius Malfoy is pretty clearly a bad person, but he's a perfect example of how banal cruelty and evilness can be. Lucius likes to control, humiliate, and cause people pain, but he's also too weak and self-absorbed to really become one of the evil "greats," so to speak.

Dumbledore's clear favoritism toward the Gryffindor house was obvious and had lasted generations. And while there was no clear reason for why he did this, it ended up being in the best interests of everyone around, despite being unfair to the students of Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
