You can take makeup on a plane in both hand luggage and checked in luggage. But the cabin luggage sizing is restricted due to potential hazards in-flight. It includes makeup such as foundation, concealer, mascara, highlighter, makeup remover and more. Please note that larger items can be placed in checked in luggage.
Makeup. When packing liquid makeup products, you'll want to stick to the liquid limits we previously mentioned. You're free to pack items like mascara, brow gel, and concealer in your carry-on, as long as they're smaller than 3.4 ounces and packed in a clear, quart-sized bag.
Make sure you know exactly what is considered a liquid before you go as some may surprise you. Mascara is considered a liquid, as is anything deemed 'spreadable. ' Also keep in mind that sharp objects, like razors, might be subject to restrictions.
Use a clear bag
We already know this, but I'm not talking about the clear Ziploc bags that TSA recommends. Instead, get a 1 qt. -sized reusable clear makeup bag. First of all, the ability to reuse this over and over again will save you from having to make that dreaded pre-vacation trip to Target to get sandwich bags.
You've just gotta have it. Makeup in a solid or powder form is allowed in carry-on and checked bags with no quantity or size limitations. However, when packed in carry-on bags, makeup in a liquid, lotion, gel, paste or creamy form, must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces or less.
Limits on liquids, aerosols and gels
All liquids, aerosols and gel items must be in containers of 100 millilitres or 100 grams or less. Containers must fit into one transparent and re-sealable plastic bag, like a snap-lock bag.
Any liquid toiletries or makeup will have to abide by the TSA liquid rule. This means that each makeup container must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller, and all containers must fit inside a one quart (one liter) clear zip top bag.
Mascara usually isn't above 3.4 oz, so you're free to pack it in your hand luggage. But you have to pack it in your bag of toiletries together with all your other liquids. In checked baggage, there aren't any packing restrictions for mascara.
If you have products that don't easily squeeze into tubes, such as scrubs and creams, these sample-sized jars are perfect for travel. From there I put all my products into clear bags. I personally like thicker bags made for cosmetics. Again, any clear bag, one-quart or smaller, is good for TSA.
According to the TSA, concealer, foundation, and even liquid eyeliner falls into the same category as other liquid toiletries, like shampoo and conditioner.
Mascara, lip gels and liquid eyeliner are the three most commonly restricted make-up items. Chapstick's, powders and solid make up items such as solid lipstick and foundation sticks, don't have any restrictions on them.
TSA considers tweezers to be completely safe, so they're allowed on planes. You can pack tweezers in hand or checked baggage without any packing restrictions. But TSA doesn't allow packing sharp objects in hand baggage because some of them could be used as potential weapons.
You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes through the checkpoint. These are limited to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. This is also known as the 3-1-1 liquids rule.
If you are travelling with mascara, make sure that it is in a container and placed in a clear, resealable plastic bag along with any other liquids that you are carrying.
Since toothpaste is considered a liquid, paste, or gel by the TSA, most of us toss those tiny one-ounce tubes in our carry-on bags. However, if you want to ditch the hard-to-recycle packaging, consider toothpaste tablets, an ecofriendly alternative that's not subject to the 3-1-1 rule.
TSA classifies both solid deodorant and lipstick as solids. Neither needs to go in your liquids bag.
Before Your Flight
Your preflight checklist should include more than just your boarding pass and carry-on—how you prep your skin beforehand is just as important. For one, Yadav recommends removing all of your makeup before a flight.
According to current Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations, all liquids that are carried into the cabin of the plane must be in a 1-quart bag. It must be a clear plastic bag that you will take out of your carry-on luggage and put in the screening bin while going through the security line.
TSA has a limit on the size of liquids, gels and aerosols that travelers can bring in their carry-on bags. It's called the 3-1-1 liquids rule. Each item must be 3.4 ounces or less and must be able to fit inside a one-quart size clear zip-top bag.
Wet wipes are solids (although damp ones at that) so they don't fall under the restrictions on gels, liquids and aerosols. I've always carried a pack of the antibacterial ones in my carry on. I don't put them in my ziplock bag (as they need to be readily accessible) and never had any problems.
As long as you keep your liquid or aerosol deodorant in a container that is smaller than 3.4 ounces (100ml) and store it in a quart-sized, zip-top bag, you shouldn't have a problem traveling with it. There are no restrictions for packing solid deodorants in your carry-on luggage.
Can I take scissors, tweezers or an umbrella in hand luggage? While most everyday items such as scissors, nail clippers, and tweezers are allowed, there are other simple items that are prohibited. You definitely won't be cracking open the wine on board as corkscrews are not allowed in hand luggage.
Even when certain dangerous items are allowed onboard, whether it's in checked or carry-on luggage, they may require special packing procedures. Dangerous items not allowed in carry-on baggage include anything that could be used as a weapon, sharp objects, and flammable materials or substances.
