In NSW in 2020, the minimum aggregate required to score an ATAR of 90 or above was approximately 370, corresponding to an average scaled score of 37 per unit across 10 units.
Students who achieve a Band 5 will have a more detailed, perceptive and developed understanding of their course materials. Take a step even further and you get a Band 6. To achieve a Band 6, students must have a much more sophisticated and refined understanding of the course content compared to Band 5 responses.

The reality is that most students arrive at university with an ATAR of less than 90. It is a rank, and therefore only some students will get 90 and above. The ATAR shows a student's achievement in relation to other students. It's also not a complete sign of "success".

An ATAR score of 70 out of 100, for example, means you are in the top 30 percent for academic achievement in your cohort. Only 30 percent of people around your age completed secondary education and achieved better grades.
Your rank is based on how you went compared to other Year 12 students. So even if your test scores are lower than you'd hoped, if you're still ranked in the top 20% of students, then you'll receive an ATAR of 80. As the ATAR is a percentile, a 99.95 ATAR means that you are in the top 0.05% of your state. Likewise, an ATAR of 99 means that you are in the top 1% of your state. Generally an ATAR of 99+ is considered as competitive for entry into Medicine (dependent on performances in the UCAT and Interviews).
All depends on how strong you are in the subjects. You may do 6 subjects, but then find it's too much and start falling behind in all your subjects; or you may not at all. No one can really say on your behalf! You can definitely get a high ATAR with only five subjects.
An ATAR of 100 is impossible
Because the ATAR is a rank (not a percentage or mark) and it's measured in increments of 0.05 the highest ATAR you could get is 99.95.
Ultimately, getting 99 ATAR is no easy undertaking. It requires hard work, dedication, and a willingness to use all of the resources available to you. For those students who are aiming for the top universities, a high ATAR score is essential – and it is within your reach.
I just checked the aggregate to ATAR conversion sheet for 2021, and for an ATAR of 85 you needed an aggregate of 145. So if you're doing a total of 5 subjects, and you got a 30 scaled for one of them, then you'd need a 35.5 scaled study score on average for your top 4.
