While recovery instructions may be tailored to individualize a plan of care based upon your specific needs, these instructions are common following cyst removal surgery: You will need to arrange for a ride home the day of your surgery and we recommend someone stay with you for the first 24 hours at home.
Most patients can go home the same day. In some cases, an overnight stay may be required. Expect some soreness around the surgical site during the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery. Walking is encouraged, based on your energy level.
What is the aftercare and recovery following a cyst removal? For stitched wounds, the wound will take 10-14 days to heal. We ask you to be generally restful through this period by avoiding heavy exercise or anything strenuous. People can usually return to an office job the next day.
You may be able to go back to work 1 or 2 days after surgery. It depends on the type of work you do and how you feel. You may shower, but do not get the area wet until your doctor says it's okay. Keep the bandage dry by covering it with plastic.
Your Recovery
If your incision is left open, it may take from a few weeks to several months to heal. After the incision has healed, you will have a scar where the cyst was removed. This will fade and become softer with time. Most people can go back to work and most activities after 2 to 4 weeks.
You will feel a pinching sensation at the injection location and a feeling of pressure as the medication is injected around the cyst. Following this injection, cutting the cyst leads to a sensation of light pressure instead of sharp pain.

Care After Your Cyst Is Removed
You can expect to have soreness in that area for a couple of days.
How Long Does a Cyst Removal Take? A cyst removal is a relatively simple procedure. It should take no longer than 30 minutes to remove most cysts.
You have two options for sleeping positions during the postoperative period: your stomach or your side. Either of these sleeping styles can help reduce the strain on of your back and buttocks. When lying on your side, be careful not to curl into a position that stretches your lower back.
It's usually carried out under local anaesthetic, where you remain conscious, but the area is numbed so you cannot feel anything. It can also be carried out under general anaesthetic, where you're unconscious and unable to feel anything. A cut is made in the abscess or cyst and the fluid is drained.
On the Day of the Surgery
Since you may have general anesthesia, you will usually be asked not to drink or eat anything after midnight the night before the surgery. Take the drugs your doctor told you to take with a small sip of water. Your doctor or nurse will tell you when to arrive at the hospital.
Was Anesthesia Used? It is never a good idea to drive yourself home from surgery, as anesthesia can slow reflexes, slow your thought processes, and can even cause amnesia in the hours following surgery. In fact, you should refrain from driving for the first 24 to 48 hours after receiving anesthesia.
You can resume your normal daily activities as soon as you are comfortable doing them. Walking and stair climbing are fine. Gradually increase your activity level as you are able.
Before you leave the hospital, your nurse will go over the discharge orders or Home Care Instructions with you. DO NOT drive a car for 48 hours after your laparoscopy, because the anaesthesia causes drowsiness. You don't need to stay in bed, but it's best to rest and take it easy for the remainder of the day.
If you've had a laparoscopic cystectomy, you may be able to go home within two or three hours. If you had open surgery, you may need to stay overnight. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions for after the procedure.
Ovarian Cyst Removal Recovery Time
After laparoscopic surgery, most patients will go back to work within a week and resume vigorous physical activity, like running, within two weeks. If you've undergone open surgery, you'll need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for six weeks.
