Separation anxiety is a treatable condition. In some cases, it's preventable with training and behavioral modification. As with most conditions, the sooner you get a diagnosis and begin treatment, the better the prognosis.
Do puppies grow out of separation anxiety? Unfortunately, puppies don't just grow out of separation anxiety. If you leave it untreated, it will likely just get worse, and it certainly won't get any better! However, thankfully, it's not too difficult to treat and just takes a little TLC and training.
It will not go away on its own, and most often a complete "cure" is never experienced. But, there are many things an owner can do right away to begin to ease the symptoms. Separation Anxiety can range from minor to severe.
Anti-anxiety medication can help a dog tolerate some level of isolation without experiencing anxiety. It can also make treatment progress more quickly. On rare occasions, a dog with mild separation anxiety might benefit from drug therapy alone, without accompanying behavior modification.
Create routines and boundaries so your dog experiences low-intensity separation. Crate training is recommended as a preventative measure. In treating, start small in managing separation, like training your dog to stay in another room while you leave, and then work up to leaving the house.
During a puppy's first year they really don't like to be left alone for long – even popping into the next room in the early weeks can leave them anxiously wondering where you've gone. This means that puppies can feel vulnerable at night if they are left on their own. They cry because they need company and comfort.
Begin by closing your puppy in the confinement area with a chew toy or other constructive activity, then quietly walk out of the room. Return immediately and reward them with praise and a treat. Repeat the process, slowly increasing how long you're away each time.
Most dogs or puppies will settle down and stop crying or barking within a half-hour after they are left alone.
The dog breeds that are more likely to have this problem are the German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Jack Russell Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, Toy Poodle, Labrador Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, and German Shorthaired Pointer.
Being calm when you return home helps to reduce the tension. For these reasons, it is helpful to ignore dogs with separation anxiety for between 10 and 30 minutes before departures and after arrivals. Consciously avoid interacting with your dog for at least 10 minutes before you have to leave.
Expect to spend around two months working with your dog to alleviate his separation anxiety. Taking it slowly during the early stages–getting your dog comfortable at the moment of your departure–will allow the later stages of lengthening your time away to much more quickly.
And finally, don't leave your puppy to cry it out.
When you leave your baby puppy to cry alone, you teach him that you aren't available to keep him safe. Puppies can become even more anxious and fearful. You want him to know that you will help him if he's crying. It's ok to soothe your upset puppy.
Young puppies under six months shouldn't really be left alone for more than two hours. And it's a good idea to build up the time they spend alone gradually to prevent separation anxiety from setting in. When you do leave your puppy alone, it's a good idea to crate train them, or leave them in a puppy-proofed room.
If you leave your puppy alone for too long, no matter how many toys they have, they can get separation anxiety. A puppy definitely needs companionship, playtime, and pee and poop breaks during the workday, so be sure to plan for that.
Tips to help prevent separation anxiety
Constant attention when you are home makes it harder for him when you leave. Schedule alone time for your dog each day while you go for a walk, pick up groceries, take a short drive, or take a shower.
Your pup is going to have to cry it out many times, without a response from you, before they learn how to settle down on their own. As hard as it is to ignore puppy's cries for attention, this is how we help puppy learn to self-soothe (which is a necessary skill to learn).
According to the American Kennel Club, puppies younger than 10 weeks cannot be left alone for more than an hour. From 3-6 months, they should not be left longer than their age in months (for example, 3-month-old puppies cannot be alone for longer than 3 hours).
Their young bodies and brains are still developing, and leaving them alone for too long can lead to behavioral issues and conditions like separation anxiety. No dog should be left alone for a full 8-hour workday.
Dog massages, snuggles and a good brushing can help distract a dog from its triggers and make it easier for them to feel safe and at ease. Mentally stimulating toys can provide a distraction for pets experiencing anxiety, hyperactivity and boredom.
As dogs age, some show a significant increase in anxiety and other behavioral issues. With a potential decrease in their senses of hearing, sight and smell, dogs can startle more easily. It may be more generalized, with your dog seeming to enjoy things less or even being jumpier.
Chamomile, pet-friendly CBD oils, and melatonin are all good options for helping lower your dog's heart rate. Check with your veterinarian before giving your dog any over-the-counter supplements to ensure you're giving your dog the correct dose.
