Canesten Thrush Oral Capsule can be used if the candidal infection returns after 7 days. However, if the candidal infection recurs more than twice within six months, patients should be advised to consult their physician.
Canesten oral capsule is a single-dose treatment for thrush. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. It can be taken either with or without food, at any time of day.
Treating oral thrush
Topical medication will usually need to be used several times a day for around 7 to 14 days. Tablet or capsules are usually taken once daily. These medications don't often have side effects, although some can cause nausea (feeling sick), vomiting, bloating, abdominal (tummy) pain and diarrhoea.
The usual doses for adults are: oral (mouth) thrush – 50mg a day, taken for 7 to 14 days. vaginal thrush or balanitis – 150mg, taken as a single dose. vaginal thrush that keeps coming back – 150mg, taken once every 72 hours for the first 3 doses, then 150mg once a week for 6 months.
If you use too much
If you insert too many pessaries at the same time, you may feel discomfort or irritation. Stop using the pessaries and see a doctor if the discomfort or irritation does not go away.
Although topical anti-fungals may offer some relief of symptoms because they are emollients, for some women they may irritate already sensitised vulval skin, and oral fluconazole is a systemic drug which can have consequences for the liver if overused.

What if it's thrush, but the anti-fungals don't work? If you have thrush, anti-fungal treatments are usually effective. But for around 5% of women, thrush keeps coming back or doesn't completely clear despite treatment. In these case, it may be necessary to see a specialist.
Oral thrush clears up within a few weeks with the proper antifungal treatment. The condition may be harder to treat if you have a weakened immune system from HIV infection, cancer, or diabetes.
It usually takes nystatin liquid around a week to treat oral thrush, you'll need to continue taking it for 2 days after this to make sure all the fungus has been killed. Take it for as long as your doctor advised.

If a single dose does not completely relieve symptoms, or the infection is severe, fluconazole can be prescribed as three consecutive doses given three days apart. With this regimen it's expected that symptoms should improve within one to two weeks.
Treatment for vaginal thrush
Occasionally a second course of treatment is required. Repeated topical treatments (applied to the skin) may occasionally cause skin irritation.
You should also see your doctor if the itchiness and pain doesn't go away or comes back again after treatment. Although thrush is common, it is not the only thing that can cause itchiness or pain, and accidentally using anti-thrush medication when you have another condition can sometimes make that condition worse.
Canesten Cream should be applied thinly and evenly to the affected areas two or three times daily and rubbed in gently. A strip of cream (1/2 cm long) is enough to treat an area of about the size of the hand.
Clotrimazole works by killing the yeast that causes the fungal infection. It usually treats thrush within 7 days but it's best to treat the infection for at least 2 weeks to stop it coming back. The most common side effect is an itching or burning feeling in the area being treated.
For severe infections, the most common treatment is fluconazole (an antifungal medication) taken by mouth or through a vein. If patient does not get better after taking fluconazole, healthcare providers may prescribe a different antifungal.

Talk to your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 7 days of taking fluconazole for vaginal thrush, balanitis or oral thrush. Your doctor may ask you to take it for longer, or they may prescribe a different antifungal treatment. If your symptoms get worse at any time, speak to your doctor.
