You should not put a standard Corelle plate in an air fryer because Corelle explicitly warns against using their dinnerware in air fryers, toaster ovens, and other countertop appliances due to the risk of breakage from extreme heat or rapid temperature changes, even though Corelle is oven-safe up to 350°F (but not with direct heat elements). While some users successfully use oven-safe glass dishes in air fryers (as the air fryer acts like a convection oven), Corelle's specific warning against their products in these appliances means it's safer to avoid it.
You can't cook foods with wet batter, liquids, or loose items like leafy greens in an air fryer as they make a mess; also avoid rice, pasta, popcorn, and large roasts that need even liquid-based cooking or have too much drippings, as they won't cook properly or will burn the machine. Essentially, anything requiring boiling, stewing, or a significant amount of liquid, or very delicate items that blow around, should be avoided.
What type of plates are best for air frying? The best plates for air frying are ceramic, metal, and heat-resistant glass. Make sure the plate is smaller than the basket and can handle high temperatures (up to 200°C).
It's a Problem with the Paint
Those regulations only came into effect around 40 years ago, meaning that if you have a set of dishes from pre-1980, there could be lead in the paint. If the paint leaches, meaning it chips, flakes off or mixes in with the food, you might consume lead along with your meal.
Corelle is lightweight, break-resistant dinnerware made from layered glass (Vitrelle) for everyday use, while CorningWare is typically heavier cookware (casseroles, bakeware) originally made from heat-shock-resistant glass-ceramic (Pyroceram) but now often includes stoneware or glass, with distinct thermal properties. Corelle is known for chip/shatter resistance, whereas original CorningWare could go from freezer to oven due to its Pyroceram material, making the main difference their intended use and material composition for thermal performance.
Before you even consider putting any dish, plate, or bowl in your air fryer, verify the dish is oven-safe. This will either be marked on the bottom of the dish or on the original packaging for the dishes. Plastic and certain types of glass should never be placed in an air fryer.
People are getting rid of air fryers due to small basket sizes limiting family meals, issues with peeling non-stick coatings, difficulty cleaning, safety concerns like melting components, the perception they're just small ovens, limitations on certain foods (like wet batters), and sometimes switching to cheaper, more efficient appliances like halogen ovens. Many find they outgrow basic models, leading to batch cooking, and eventually replace them with larger or different appliances.
Wet Batters
Those beer-battered onion rings, fries, fish cutlets, and tempura veggies and more are not well suited for a crisp in the air fryer. The batter will drip down into the base of the machine, making a big mess to cleanup afterward.
Using knives or other sharp utensils inside the air fryer can scratch the non-stick coating, which is crucial for its performance, keeping it undamaged will prolong the life of your appliance.
Close air fryer basket and air fry at 360F or 180C for about 4 minutes. Your eggs will be perfectly fried with well cooked white and slightly runny yolk.
Corelle® products can be used for serving and re-heating food in microwaves or pre-heated conventional ovens up to 350° F (176° C).
Corningware and Pyrex bowls, as long as they fit into the airfryer, can be used.
Air-frying equipment is not known to cause cancer, but the process of air frying does result in the formation of certain compounds, like acrylamide, that are linked to cancer development. Acrylamide is classified as a probable human carcinogen.
The "air fryer rule of 25" is a handy guideline for converting oven recipes: reduce the oven temperature by 25°F (or 10-20°C) and decrease the cooking time by about 20-25%, checking for doneness earlier. This rule works because air fryers cook faster and more intensely than conventional ovens, circulating hot air efficiently to crisp food quickly, so you often need less time and slightly lower heat.
Air Fryers Reduce Taste Quality
Out of the top three reasons restaurants don't use air fryers, the taste is the leading cause. It has numerous benefits and can cook food efficiently. However, the taste can be subpar compared to other cooking methods available at the commercial level.
Plastic Containers (Non-Heat-Resistant Plastics)
Regular plastics, which are not designed to withstand heat, can melt and release toxic chemicals into food when used in an air fryer. This not only damages the air fryer but can also be harmful to your health.
✅ You can safely put metal plates, ceramic plates, and heat-resistant glass plates in an air fryer—as long as they're oven-safe and can tolerate temperatures of at least 400°F.
Pyrex® dishes are ideal for use in air fryers. Our glass dishes withstand extreme temperatures, from -40°C to +350°C. They retain neither stains nor odors, preserving the purity of flavors.
You should seriously consider getting rid of or repurposing old Corelle dishes (pre-2005) due to potential lead contamination in the decorative paints, especially if the glaze is worn or chipped, as Corelle itself suggests using them decoratively; modern Corelle (post-2005) is safe, but for vintage pieces with colorful patterns, using them as display items or for non-food purposes is the safest bet if you're concerned about lead exposure, especially with hot foods or microwaving.
Corelle dishes are special due to their unique three-layer glass construction (Vitrelle), making them incredibly durable, chip-resistant, lightweight, and space-saving, while also being microwave, dishwasher, oven (preheated), freezer, and refrigerator safe, offering a long-lasting, easy-to-clean, and hygienic dining solution with many styles.
