Crocodiles are extremely unpredictable animals, and this is not stressed by pet stores enough. Crocodiles cannot be tamed, and they certainly cannot be domesticated. Crocodiles can however be target trained, and this is down to pet stores and owners taking responsibility for this training.
In rare cases, individual crocodilians have been known to bond so strongly with people that they become playmates for years. For example, a man who rescued a crocodile that had been shot in the head became close friends with the animal. They happily played every day until the crocodile's death 20 years later.

Lions can't be tamed

There is no particular reason to suppose crocodiles are not conscious. They appear to be conscious and they have the cortical structures in the brain that are associated with consciousness, so in the absence of any counter evidence, the reasonable assumption is that they are conscious.
As it or something like it appears to be present in the brains of all vertebrates, it's possible that even crocodiles have empathy. What may surprise you even more is that this shared heritage of brain structure means empathy can be shared across different species.
