Kidney function, specifically the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), starts to decline gradually in most people after age 30-40, decreasing by about 1% per year after age 50, with a more noticeable drop after 70, though this is a normal aging process, not necessarily disease. This decline involves losing filtering units (nephrons), stiffening blood vessels, and reduced blood flow, with roughly one-third of older adults maintaining normal function and many others experiencing mild decline without serious issues.
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the top culprits damaging kidneys most, as they harm the delicate filtering blood vessels, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and failure; other major factors include smoking, obesity, dehydration, poor diet (high sugar/salt/red meat), certain medications (NSAIDs), lack of sleep, and genetic conditions. These factors create a cycle where damaged kidneys worsen blood pressure, further damaging them.
The decline in kidney function could be considered a normal part of healthy ageing. The normal decline rate could be considered between −0.37 and −1.07 mL/min/year in healthy adults without hypertension.
Symptoms can include:
Nausea and vomiting, muscle cramps, loss of appetite, swelling via feet and ankles, dry, itchy skin, shortness of breath, trouble sleeping, urinating either too much or too little. However, these are usually in the later stages, but they can also happen in other disorders.
For adults, a normal eGFR is about 100. The lowest eGFR is 0, which means your kidneys aren't working. A healthcare provider may diagnose chronic kidney disease if your eGFR stays below 60 for three months.

There are things you can do or avoid to forestall further renal decline, particularly in the realm of lifestyle modifications.
To strengthen your kidneys, focus on a healthy lifestyle: stay hydrated with water, eat a balanced diet low in salt and processed foods, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, while also managing blood pressure and blood sugar to prevent damage.
Canned foods, some frozen foods, and most processed meats contain large amounts of salt. Snack foods such as chips and crackers are also high in salt. Table salt, some seasonings, ketchup, mustard, and certain sauces such as barbecue, soy, and teriyaki sauces are high in sodium.
Kidney disease can affect anyone at any age. Babies can be born with kidneys that haven't developed normally or don't function normally. Genetic alterations can result in kidney diseases developing during childhood or later in life. Other types of kidney disease can develop at any age.
Soda is one of the worst drinks for kidney health. Regular soda is packed with sugar and caffeine. Dark sodas also contain phosphorus additives. These can be harmful to people with kidney problems because they can cause bone and heart issues.
Early Signs of Kidney Disease
To support kidney health, focus on fruits like berries, apples, and red grapes; vegetables such as cauliflower, red peppers, and leafy greens; lean proteins like fish (salmon) and egg whites; and healthy fats from olive oil, using herbs and spices instead of salt for flavor, as a varied diet rich in whole foods helps filter toxins and manage inflammation.
Chronic kidney failure
Water is the best beverage for supporting kidney health. It helps flush out toxins, maintains electrolyte balance, and prevents dehydration. Drinking at least 8–10 glasses of water daily is essential for anyone in recovery, especially those enrolled in an Alcohol Treatment Program or Drug Rehab Programs.
Regular physical activity is key to potentially slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). By improving cardiovascular health, controlling blood pressure, and managing blood sugar levels, exercise reduces primary risk factors for CKD progression.
Often it's the result of a combination of different problems. CKD can be caused by: high blood pressure – over time, this can put strain on the small blood vessels in the kidneys and stop the kidneys working properly. diabetes – too much glucose in your blood can damage the tiny filters in the kidneys.
SGLT2 inhibitors (also known as “flozins”), such as dapagliflozin (or other drugs ending in -flozin), along with a drug called finerenone may be used to try and slow down the decline in your kidney function. Your kidney doctor will discuss with you whether you need to be on this medication.
Stress and uncontrolled reactions to stress can also lead to kidney damage. As the blood filtering units of your body, your kidneys are prone to problems with blood circulation and blood vessels. High blood pressure and high blood sugar can place an additional strain or burden on your kidneys.
The prevalence in the US elderly was much higher at about 39.4% of persons aged 60+ years have been noted to have CKD versus 12.6 and 8.5% of persons aged 40–59 years and 20–39 years, respectively [9].
Creatinine Clearance
For men aged 19 or 75 years, the normal range is 77 to 160 mL/min/BSA. The normal ranges for creatinine clearance for women are as follows: Ages 18-29: 78 to 161 mL/min/BSA. Ages 30-39: 72 to 154 mL/min/BSA.
