Sheep are non-aggressive animals; they'll usually try to flee from any predators or threats. However, ewes with lambs and rams of breeding age are exceptions.
While sheep are generally docile, non-aggressive creatures, this is not necessarily the case with rams (intact males), especially during the breeding season (rut). Rams can be very aggressive and have been known to cause serious injuries, even death, to people.
Try to make yourself look as large as possible by standing on your tiptoes and raising your arms above your head. Shout loudly, but do not shout “mint sauce”. All Lake District sheep have heard this threat before and are now immune to it.
It can be difficult to stop an aggressive ram from butting. Striking him may make him more aggressive or cause him injury. Spraying water on the ram's face may dissuade him from butting. You can put a mask on the ram to keep him from butting.
Aggressive behaviors are associated with normal sexual behavior and highest during the breeding season. Sexual behaviors that can translate to aggressive behaviors towards humans include pawing at the ground, nibbling, head butting, charging, and gargling vocalizations.

TWO: Sheep are naturally friendly. They can wag their tails, like dogs, and they form strong bonds with other sheep, goats…and people.
Sheep are highly social animals. They like to be around other sheep they're familiar with and find it stressful to be isolated from their flock.
When escape is prevented, even a ewe may charge or threaten by hoof stomping. Separation from the flock can cause stress and panic. Isolation from other sheep can cause severe stress and should be avoided.
Never trot or canter through fields of sheep unless they are distant enough to be undisturbed by you – keep checking and walk if you are disturbing them. Sheep are most likely to avoid horses and riders or run from intruders in their field.
Fear: Sheep can be fearful animals; they are not renowned for being brave! They'll almost always choose to run, rather than fight. At times their fear might be expressed with a startled bleat.
There is little doubt that humans are better than sheep in learning to recognize human faces, although our expertise in recognizing sheep faces is clearly more closely rivalled by sheep.
As with some other animals such as dogs and monkeys, sheep are social animals that can recognise other sheep as well as familiar humans.
Sheep are prey animals, largely defenceless against predators and naturally nervous and easily frightened. They flock together for safety. Sheep have a 'flight zone' – the distance they keep from a potential threat such as a person or sheepdog - which varies depending how wild the sheep are.
Sheep do sleep, either standing up or lying down. As they are animals that others like to eat, they sleep lightly by taking short naps rather than one big sleep. When they suffer insomnia, they count people.
We have been able to demonstrate in behavioural choice maze experiments some ability of sheep to distinguish between sheep and human voices (Kendrick et al. 1995).
Increasingly, sheep and other farm livestock are being kept as pets or companions. They can make good pets because they are a gentle animal and respond well to human contact. Lambs make great projects for children.
Sheep that are accustomed to people enjoy being petted by their humans. However, sheep that are unaccustomed to people do not like to be petted and their fight or flight response is activated. Sheep approached by strangers may react favorably or not, depending on their level of socialization to multiple people.
Watching sheep you can see that they are friendly towards one another displaying signs of affection. Observe sheep rubbing heads, one sheep laying his or her head on the back of another sheep - just two signs of affection my husband and I have personally seen.
Disadvantages of Producing Sheep
Sheep are subject to predation by coyotes, eagles, bobcats, lions, bears, domestic dogs, etc. Sheep require better fencing than do cattle. Internal parasites can create health problems when sheep are intensively grazed on irrigated pastures.
Like us, sheep experience fear when they're separated from their social groups or approached by strangers. Sheep's heart rates have been found to increase by 20 beats per minute when they're unable to see any members of their flock and by 84 beats per minute when approached by a man and a dog.
Abnormal behaviors are considered the main indicator of stress and distress. Sheep may express abnormal behaviors such as mouthing bars, chewing slats or chains, biting and chewing pen fixtures, and repetitive butting, although they do not display these behaviors as frequently as other farm species (12) .
