Benign tumors, while sometimes painful and potentially dangerous, don't pose the same threat as malignant tumors. While benign tumors generally don't invade and spread, malignant cells are more likely to metastasize, or travel to other areas of the body. They also grow faster.
Benign tumors are not usually problematic. However, they can become large and compress structures nearby, causing pain or other medical complications. For example, a large benign lung tumor could compress the trachea (windpipe) and cause difficulty in breathing. This would warrant urgent surgical removal.
If the benign tumor is small, not growing and not causing any harm to the patient, it can be left alone. Even benign tumors in or around the brain only need to be removed if they are causing, or are likely to cause, neurological problems.
Benign tumors may be painless, but often they cause bone pain. The pain can be severe. Pain may occur when at rest or at night and tends to progressively worsen. (See also Overview of Bone Tumors.
Can a benign tumor become malignant? Some benign tumors can become cancerous over time (for example, in your colon or skin). If you have a benign neoplasm, a healthcare provider should monitor it regularly.
In most cases, the outlook with benign tumors is very good. But benign tumors can be serious if they press on vital structures such as blood vessels or nerves. Therefore, sometimes they require treatment and other times they do not.
Benign means it is not cancer. Benign tumours: usually grow quite slowly. don't spread to other parts of the body.

They can feel firm or soft. Benign masses are more likely to be painful to the touch, such as with an abscess. Benign tumors also tend to grow more slowly, and many are smaller than 5 cm (2 inches) at their longest point. Sarcomas (cancerous growths) more often are painless.
Benign tumors grow only in one place. They cannot spread or invade other parts of your body. Even so, they can be dangerous if they press on vital organs, such as your brain.
The smaller the tumor on a radiograph the more likely it is to be benign as 80% of lung nodules less than 2 cm in diameter are benign. Most benign nodules are smoothed radiopaque densities with clear margins but these are not exclusive signs of benign tumors.
MRI is very good at zeroing in on some kinds of cancers. By looking at your body with MRI, doctors may be able to see if a tumor is benign or cancerous. According to the World Health Organization, survival rates for many types of cancer are significantly higher with early detection.
Benign (non-cancerous) brain tumours can usually be successfully removed with surgery and do not usually grow back. It often depends on whether the surgeon is able to safely remove all of the tumour. If there's some left, it can either be monitored with scans or treated with radiotherapy.
In general, benign tumors grow slowly, and some never need treatment. Others may cause serious health risks when they press on nearby organs, nerves or blood vessels, or grow in the brain or on the spinal cord.
Benign masses are often soft and mobile, as is typical of a lipoma. In adults, most small superficial soft-tissue tumors are lipomas, whereas, in children most are hemangiomas.
The best test to determine whether a cyst or tumor is benign or malignant is a biopsy. This procedure involves removing a sample of the affected tissue — or, in some cases, the entire suspicious area — and studying it under a microscope.
You may be able to see a growth. Certain things about the image might even suggest that it's likely to be cancerous. But there are many benign (noncancerous) tumors that look very much like cancerous growths. That's why, if your doctor suspects cancer from imaging, they will almost always follow up with a biopsy.
Less than 1 out of 10 become malignant. If necessary, they can be removed with surgery.
They can lead to bleeding, bladder problems and pelvic pain. Lipomas: Lipomas are formed by fat cells. They are the most common type of benign tumor.
The staging system for benign musculoskeletal tumors (Table 1) consists of three categories: ie, latent, active, and aggressive [4]. The classification is based on radiographic characteristics of the tumor host margin.
What can you do? “Unfortunately, a CT scan is unable to show whether a nodule is benign or not,” says Dr. Wong. “It is important to be proactive about a nodule because earlier detection of lung cancer can make a huge difference in the outcome.”
Can you diagnose without a biopsy? The short answer is no. While imaging and blood draws can show suspicious areas or levels, removing tissue and studying it is the only way to diagnose cancer 100%. Home tests to detect things like colon cancer only look for blood or DNA markers in your stool.
Which Cancers are Most Commonly Misdiagnosed? In general, the cancers which are commonly misdiagnosed as harmless (benign), or overdiagnosed (as cancer when they are not), are not surprisingly those that are among the most common.
In clinical work, imaging technologies are generally used to identify lung metastasis; however, it is difficult to distinguish malignant from benign pulmonary nodules in some patients. Thus, some benign lung nodules are misdiagnosed as lung metastases, resulting in incorrect clinical staging and treatment.
