Buy Nothing Day in Australia is observed on the Saturday after Black Friday, the last Saturday of November. In North America it is held one day earlier, on Black Friday itself. It is an international day of protest against overconsumption. Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, Canada, where artist Ted Dave first held it in 1992. The idea was picked up by Adbusters magazine, which has supported the initiative ever since.
In Australia there is another movement promoting conscious consumer behaviour: Buy Nothing New Month. The movement encourages people to think twice before buying something new. The campaign runs during the month of October.
